External factors: ensure privacy, refuse interruptions, physical environment, dress, avoid excessive note-taking may be unavoidable
Challenges of note-taking
Breaks eye-contact too often, shifts attention away from person, May be threatening to pts discussion of sensitive issues
Electronic health record (EHR)
Do not let computer become barrier, begin interview per usual in face-to-face manner, explain charting
Facilitation
Encourages client to say more, shows person your are interested
Silence
Communicates that client has time to think, silence can be uncomfortable for a novice examiner, but interruption can make clients lose their train of thought
Reflection
Echoes clients words by repeating part of what person has just said, can help express feelings behind words, mirroring clients words can help person elaborate on problem
Empathy
Names a feeling and allowed expression, allows person to feel and accepted and strengthens rapport
Clarification
Useful when persons word choice is ambiguous or confusing, summarizes persons words, simplifying the statement, and ensure you’re on the right track
Confrontation
Clarifying inconsistent information
Interpretation
Based on your inference or conclusion, links events, prompts further discussion of topic
