What is the prototype?
Sumatriptan
Given PO, SQ, or intranasal
Why is it prescribed?
Acute migraine abortive medication
How does it work?
Vasoconstriction of cranial vessels
What happens if it works too well?
Sedation is the main effect (i.e., CNS)
Effects related to vasoconstriction may also occur, like dizziness, weakness, blood pressure alterations, visual disturbances (i.e., not hallucinations), and chest pain/angina
What is special about it (4)?
Caution
Geriatric clients (i.e., underlying vascular disease)
Clients with CAD risk factors r/t vasoconstriction
Lactation
Renal/hepatic dysfunction
CI with MAOIs are possible
Must wait at least 2 weeks after discontinuation
Extreme caution with ergot-containing drugs (i.e., another migraine tx) b/c it may increase vasoconstrictive effects
Monitor BP, kidney/liver function, migraine severity, dizziness, sedation, and falls
