When was Riptide released, who by and which music genre
2013 and was sang by vance joy who is an australian- the song would be classed as indie folk pop genre
Who was the record company and was the video a success
it was part of atlantic records which is a subsidary of warner and the video got 100 million views on youtube so was very successful
was the low budget look on purpose for style of an economic descion
Probably both. This wasone of Vance Joys first song and so it probably wouldnt have had much finantial support and so it would have had to be made cheaply but at the same time the fact that the song is Indie means that it would make sense for it to be made to look as if it is home made
Would the homemade look of the video make it more or less attractive to a mainstream audience
It would make the band seem more authentic as there is the look that they made it and have aolt of control but the fact that it isnt a big production means that there may be less fans as the video may not appeal to them like a bigger artists would.
How is intertextuality used
The video uses montage editing to convey many different stories across to the audience and to show the juxtaposition between them this also invites the audience to interpret the stories in their own way and allows them to make a story which is also helped by the lyrics matching the scenes
does the video have a lear narrative
no the video doesnt have a clear narrative yet there are small narratives withing the video such as the singer being abused and the woman escapng from the grave yard this may have been a purposefu choice as it means that there is a surrealist and avant garde nature to the video
How does the vdeo conform and subvert the typical conventions of a music video
the fact that the lyrics match the video conforms to the conventions however the fact that the lyrics match the video so obviously may subvert the conventions, the graphic images such as the hand being stabbed and the dentist = scene also subvert the conventions perhaps the video chose to subvert the conventions to make it stand out as it was his first hit song
How does he video represent a feature film
At the start of the video there is a billing vlock at the bottom of the screen and there are many shots of people filming others this suggests that the video is trying to present itself as a short film perhaps because the video wanted to be taken seriously It also shows many of the conventions of other genres such as the horror genre 9abuse of women) western and thriller genres (almost in the style of wes anderson) which is perhaps the producers making t seem like there is more artistic value to the video
How can Barthes theory be applied here
In the line all my friends are turning green there is a picture of money which the audience can interpret as being suggestive of greed and jealousy
