What is indicated by pain in the RUQ (Right Upper Quadrant)?
Cholecystitis or Hepatitis

Appendicitis

Pancreatitis or Splenic Issues

What is Murphy's Sign and what does it indicate?
Pain with RUQ palpation during inspiration, indicates Cholecystitis
What is McBurney's Point and what does tenderness indicate?
RLQ tenderness 1/3 of the way from ASIS, indicates Appendicitis
What is Rovsing's Sign and what does a positive sign indicate?
LLQ palpation elicits RLQ pain, indicates Appendicitis
What is the Psoas Sign and what does pain indicate?
Pain with right leg extension/lift, indicates Appendicitis
What is the Obturator Sign and what does pain indicate?
Pain with internal rotation of right hip, indicates Appendicitis
What does rebound tenderness indicate?
Peritonitis or Appendicitis
What does Cullen's Sign indicate?
Intraabdominal bleeding
What does Turner's Sign indicate?
Retroperitoneal hemorrhage
What does Shifting Dullness indicate?
Ascites
What do Hyperactive Bowel Sounds indicate?
Early obstruction or diarrhea

Late Obstruction, Ileus, or Opioids

Complete Obstruction
What does a Bruit indicate?
AAA (abdominal aortic aneurysm) or Stenosis
What does CVA Tenderness indicate?
Pyelonephritis or Stones
What are the clues for GERD?
Heartburn after meals, regurgitation, worse lying down
What are the clues for a Peptic Ulcer?
Epigastric pain; duodenal better with food, gastric worse; melena
What are the clues for Appendicitis?
RLQ pain, fever, +McBurney's, Rovsing's, Psoas
What are the clues for Cholecystitis?
RUQ pain after fatty meals, +Murphy's, steatorrhea
What are the clues for Diverticulitis?
LLQ pain, fever, blood-streaked stool
What are the clues for Ascites?
Fluid wave, dull flanks, increased girth
What are the clues for Peritonitis?
Rigid abdomen, rebound tenderness, hypoactive BS
What are the clues for Bowel Obstruction?
Distention, vomiting, visible peristalsis, hyper->hypo BS
What are the clues for AAA?
Pulsating mass, bruit, sudden rupture -> shock
What are the clues for Steatorrhea?
Frothy, foul, floating stool -> fat malabsorption
What are the clues for Ulcerative Colitis?
Bloody mucus diarrhea, urgency, LLQ pain
What are the clues for Crohn's Disease?
Weight loss, diarrhea, variable pain
