Life Orientation CAT Preparation
A guide to help you in preparation for your Life Orientation CAT examination.
Eustress
Stress that makes you ready for action as it gives you adrenalin and energy.
Distress
If the stress is more than you can cope with, it is unhealthy and can lead to illness, unhappiness and depression.
Stressor
Anything, event or person that causes or triggers stress.
Meditation
A natural method of relieving stress; helps to calm the mind.
Conflict
Disagreements, opposing viewpoints, or struggles for power between people.
Interpersonal conflict
Happens between people.
Intrapersonal conflict
Happens within yourself.
Assertive behavior
Communicate confidently, firmly and politely.
Characteristics and qualities
Skills needed by good communicator include ability to communicate, listen, be sympathetic, not expect others to have the same view, ability to give and take, unselfish, mutual respect and tolerant.
Extroverts
People who are energized by people, enjoy a variety of tasks, a quick pace, and are good at multitasking.
Introverts
Often like working alone or in small groups, prefer a more deliberate pace, and like to focus on one task at a time.
Sensors
Realistic people who like to focus on the facts and details; apply common sense and past experience to find practical solutions to problems.
Intuitives
Prefer to focus on possibilities and the big picture, easily see patterns, value innovation, and seek creative solutions to problems.
Thinkers
Tend to make their decisions using logical analysis, objectively weigh pros and cons, and value honesty, consistency, and fairness.
Feelers
Tend to be sensitive and cooperative, and decide based on their own personal values and how others will be affected by their actions.
Judgers
Tend to be organized and prepared, like to make and stick to plans, and are comfortable following most rules.
Perceivers
Prefer to keep their options open, like to be able to act spontaneously, and like to be flexible with making plans.
Change
A time of insecurity, leads to exciting and challenging times.
BMI (Body Mass Index)
Measure of your body composition; Ideal range: 18.5 to 25
Assessment
Continuous planned process of gathering information on achievement.
Formative assessment
Happens when you are working on something and helps you and your teacher work out how you are coping.
Summative assessment
Happens at the end of a term, chapter or project; measures how you manage over a period of time.
Self-assessment
You assess yourself; develops self-regulation.
Study skills
Tools used for study like flashcards, mind-maps, mnemonics, summaries.
Study strategies
Plans or methods for study like study plan, place, organisation.
Study styles
Particular way of studying and learning.
SR3 method
The SR3 method: Survey, Read, Recall and Review; A very effective way of studying as it helps to embed the learning material in your memory.
Study Skills
Skills are used to study like flashcards, mind maps, mnemonics, summaries.
Commitment to a decision taken
You should make a decision based on your interests, strengths, weaknesses, skills abilities and personality and commit to it.
Unemployment
When you are willing to work, ready for work and desperately wanting a job, but cannot get work because there are just not enough jobs around for everyone; when you have no work or career.
Department of Labour database
Register on the Department of Labour database as an unemployed work seekers it is a register of all unemployed people seeking work opportunities.
Volunteering
You help others (humans, animals or the environment). You give of your time and skills to others. You do not expect payment.
Community work
You do something to benefit your community or a community in need. It is also a form of volunteering, but you concentrate on the needs of your community.
Entrepreneurship
To be an entrepreneur you have to see a need and provide a service or goods that people need.
SARS (South African Revenue Services)
When you earn a salary, part of your income is taxed
Corruption and fraud
Unfair and immoral behavior.
Responsible citizenship
Be aware of, respect and promote human rights; concerned about the welfare of others; take part in various activities to fight against human right violation; obey the law; vote in elections; pay your taxes.
Campaign
A planned series of actions to achieve an aim.
Projects
Planned activities with the purpose to improve.
Events
Planned occasion or activity.
Bill of Rights
Affirms the democratic values like freedom.
Discrimination
To treat unjustly, unfairly or unequally.
Violation
Interfering with a person's rights.
Discussions
Conversations to share information and opinions.
Electronic media
Electronic media are any media that need electricity or batteries, such as the Internet and emails, websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, radio, TV, film and DVDs.
Print media
Print media include books, newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, brochures, posters and billboards.
Censorship
When the media is controlled or limited in a country so that the citizens only get some news or a certain "version" of the news.
Whistle blower
A person who reports illegal or immoral activities
Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities
Promote health-related programs such as vaccination and HIV and AIDS and access to health services.
Department of Water Affairs
Makes sure that South Africans gain access to clean water and safe sanitation.
Department of Labour
Inspects workplaces to make sure that they are safe and healthy.
Department of Health
Co-ordinates and monitors all health services in the provinces and municipalities.
Impact studies
Measure and monitor something to see if a particular action would / is having an effect; also known as audits / assessments.
Social Justice / Social Equity
An action of redress that attempts to correct unequal access to basic services.
Personal mission statement
A description about you and of our values, dreams, attitudes and goals. You set goals for yourself. The purpose is to get you to explore and identify your own values, dreams and goals.
Values
The things you choose and that are important to you in your life.
Human Factors
Factors contributed by human beings e.g. social, religious and cultural practices
Environmental factors
Factors in the environment, the natural world that contribute to ill health, accidents, disasters and crises such as floods, extreme temperatures'
Lifestyle diseases
Diseases that are a result of the way you live and affect the way you live.
Hazard
Danger, risks or a threat that is usually caused by man, such as pollution, toxic waste, deforestation etc.
Psychological factors
The mental and emotional aspects of being human.
Social factors
Issues that involve people, the community and the public.
Employment contract
An agreement signed between employer and employee.
Recruitment
The process of getting the right person to apply for the job in a company.
Job Description
Refer to the content of the job itself and sets out the duties and responsibilities required of the person employed to do the job.
Job Specification
Indicates the specific qualifications, skills and experience required of the person who will fill the job.
Trade unions
Oganizations that represent interests of members in the workplace; participate in collective bargaining/negotiations with employer e.g. salary increase.
Work ethics
Deals with a worker's attitude towards job and employer. It involves attitudes, behaviour, respect, honesty, accountability, communication and interaction with other people.
