Monroe Doctrine
Said no further European involvement in the Western Hemisphere. The USA will not intervene in Europe.
Josi Marti - 553
Cuban political activist who dedicated his life to achieving independence for Cuba. Kicked out of Cuba at age 16 for revolutionary activities. Lived in the US, after getting a masters and law degree. Died fighting for Cuban independence.
Yellow Journalism - 553
Style of writing which exaggerates the news to lure and enrage readers. Ended up deepening American sympathy for rebels.
USS Maine - 554
Brought home American citizens in danger from the fighting and to protect American property. The ship exploded and many blamed it on the Spanish.
War in the Philippines - 555
The American fleet went into the Philippines, Commodore George Dewey gave command to open fire on the Spanish fleet in Manila. American victory allowed US troops to land in the Philippines, who wanted freedom from Spain. Americans joined forces with Filipino rebels, led by Emilio.
Rough Riders - 556
A volunteer cavalry under the command of Leonard Wood and Theodore Roosevelt. The battle took place near Santiago and they won with the two African-American regiments. Their victory led the way for another attack on San Juan Hill.
Treaty of Paris - 556
Between the US and Spain, a cease fire agreement. Signed on August 12. Actual fighting of the war had only lasted 15 weeks. Both countries met in Paris, Spain freed Cuba and turned over the islands of Guam in the Pacific, and Puerto Rico to the US. Also sold the Philippines to the US for $20 million.
Foraker Act - 559
Congress passed the ___ in 1900, ended military rule and set up a civil government. Gave the US president the ability to appoint Puerto Rico's governor and members of the upper house of its legislature.
Platt Amendment - 560
Written in 1901, the US insisted that Cuba add to its constitution several provisions. Stated that Cuba couldn't make treaties that might limit its independence or permit a foreign power to control any part of its territory. The US could intervene in Cuba, Cuba was not to go into debt, the US could buy or lease on the island for naval and refueling stations.

The rebel leader believed that the US had promised independence.
Panama Canal - 566
A canal was needed which could cut across central America. At first both US and British could use it but then changed to just US.
Roosevelt Corollary 568
Warned that disorder in Latin America might cause the US to intervene using violence. Stated that the US would now use force to protect its economic interests in Latin America.
Pearl Harbor - 550
The US pressured Hawaii to use its land to build a naval base at ___, which became an American refueling station.

The government ran by him, after overthrowing the queen. Cleveland water the queen to come back but ___ stood his ground. Caused Hawaii to become a state.
