The fusion of the male and female pronuclei within the cytoplasm of the newly fertilized oocyte, giving rise to the zygote.
Syngamy
An animal in the early stages of development that has not taken an anatomical form that is recognizable as a member of a species.
Embryo
The unborn young of a eutherian mammal that has developed identifiable features of a given species.
Fetus
The products of conception, including the embryo, the extraembryonic membranes, and the placenta.
Conceptus
A cell produced by the cleavage divisions of the early embryo.
Blastomere
The diploid cell resulting from the fusion of the male and female pronuclei.
Zygote
The oocyte after the first meiotic division in which the first polar body is present.
Ootid
The ability of a single cell to differentiate and develop into a complete organism.
Totipotent
A stage of early embryonic development within the confines of the zona pellucida characterized by a round mass of blastomeres resulting from cleavage divisions of the zygote.
Morula
An early embryo consisting of an inner cell mass, a blastocoele, and a trophoblast.
Blastocyst
The cavity in the central portion of the blastocyst.
Blastocele
The formation and growth of an embryo.
Embryogenesis
The period that a female is pregnant between conception and parturition.
Gestation
The formation of a transient relationship between the chorion of the conceptus and the endometrium of the uterus.
Implantation
The organ of metabolic exchange between the fetus and the dam consisting of a portion of embryonic and maternal origin.
Placenta
To give birth.
Parturition
The outermost extraembryonic membrane, derived from trophoblastic ectoderm.
Chorion
One of the extraembryonic membranes found from the chorion that surrounds and encloses the fetus.
Amnion
One of the extraembryonic membranes formed from the embryonic ectoderm that serves as a liquid waste storage reservoir for the developing fetus.
Allantois
Small, finger like projections found on the surface of the chorion that interface with the maternal placenta.
Chorionic Villus
Causing physical defects in the developing conceptus.
Teratogenic
Abnormal or difficult parturition.
Dystocia
The points of attachment between the fetal and maternal placenta, consisting of maternal caruncle and fetal chorion.
Cotyledon
