Dependent Variable (DV)
The target behavior of interest being measured in an experiment.
Independent Variable (IV)
The manipulated aspect of the environment assessed for its effect on the dependent variable.
Internal Validity
The extent to which changes in the dependent variable are directly attributed to the manipulation of the independent variable.
External Validity
The generalizability of a study's results to other subjects, settings, or behaviors.
Single-Case Experimental Design (SCED)
An experimental design where each participant serves as their own control, allowing comparison of the effects of an intervention against their baseline data.
Reversal Design (A-B-A)
A design involving systematic introduction and withdrawal of an intervention to observe changes in the dependent variable.
Multiple Baseline Design
Implementation of an intervention in a staggered manner across different behaviors, settings, or subjects.
Multielement Design
A design that rapidly alternates between two or more interventions to compare their relative effectiveness.
Changing Criterion Design
An approach where successive changes in criteria for reinforcement are applied to evaluate an intervention's effectiveness on a behavior already in the participant's repertoire.
Baseline Logic
The methodological reasoning in SCEDs consisting of prediction, verification, and replication to establish experimental control.
