sexual dysfunctions

sexual disorder where the client finds it difficult to function adequately while having sex

sexual response cycle 🌀

• desire, arousal, plateau, orgasm, resolution

• a dysfunction is an impairment in one of these sexual response stages.

• a sequence of physical and emotional changes during sexual activity

paraphilic disorders

• sexual disorders and deviations where sexual arousal occurs almost exclusively in the context of inappropriate objects or individuals

• are misplaced sexual attraction and arousal that occurs for 6+ months for inappropriate objects or nonconsenting people

• high comorbidity with anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders as they’re worried about people finding out/try to quell their attraction.

• Diagnosed only if it causes major clinical distress or impairment OR illegal/criminal acts with non-consenting persons

• DIFFERENT from paraphilias, which are NOT diagnosed. These are unusual sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviors, but aren’t illegal or criminal acts. No major distress or impairment caused.

gender dysphoria ♂ ♀

• Psychological dissatisfaction with biological gender, a disturbance in the sense of identity as male or female.

• Primary goal isn’t sexual arousal, but to live the life of the opposite gender.

sexual desire/arousal disorders 📉

• Absence of or a decrease in sexual interest, initiation of sexual activity, pleasure, thoughts, and fantasies

• Absence of responsive desire; and/or lack of subjective arousal or of physical genital response to sexual stimulation

  a.      Male hypoactive sexual desire disorder

orgasmic disorder

• persistent difficulties in achieving orgasm despite sufficient sexual arousal and stimulation, causing distress or interpersonal difficulties

erotophobia 😨

• irrational and potentially debilitating fear of some object, person or act that is related to sex 😱

• negative cognitive set; people learn early that sexuality can be negative and threatening, and the responses they develop reflect this belief ❌

• Caused by formative experiences of sexual cues as alarming ⏰

Genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder 👩 🤕

sexual dysfunction where a woman experiences pain/difficulty with penetration during intercourse; may include vaginismus.

dyspareunia 🤕

difficult or painful sexual intercourse.

vaginismus 💥

recurring involuntary muscle spasms in the outer third of the vagina that interferes with sexual intercourse

erectile disorder 🍆

recurring inability in some men to attain or maintain adequate penile erection until completion of sexual activity.

premature ejaculation 💧

• Recurring ejaculation before the person wishes it, with minimal sexual stimulation

• Occurs within 1 min of penetration OR before desired

• Most prevalent sexual dysfunction: 21% (more common in younger, inexperienced males)

• Problem decreases with age

fetishistic disorder 💭

Long-term, recurring, intense sexually arousing urges, fantasies, or behavior involving the use of nonliving, unusual objects and that cause distress or impairment in life functioning

transvestic disorder 👗 (paraphilia)

people, usually males, are sexually aroused or receive gratification by wearing clothing of the opposite sex 👠

Autogynephilia (specifier for transvestic disorder) ♀

describing a pattern of sexual arousal associated with the thoughts or images of oneself as a female, NOT clothing itself

Exhibitionistic Disorder 🍆

sexual gratification attained by exposing genitals to unsuspecting strangers

Voyeuristic Disorder (paraphilic) 🔭

sexual arousal is derived from observing unsuspecting people undressing or naked

Frotteuristic Disorder (paraphilic)🚇

person gains sexual gratification by rubbing against unwilling victims in crowds from which they can’t escape (elevator, subway)

Pedophilic disorder (paraphilia) 🧒

strong sexual attraction toward children

Incest

• deviant sexual attraction (pedophilia) directed toward a family member

• often the attraction of a father toward daughter who’s maturing physically

Sadistic disorder (paraphilia) 🕯

sexual arousal is associated with inflicting pain or humiliation

Masochistic disorder (paraphilia) 😊

sexual arousal is associated with experiencing pain or humiliation
