Innate Immune System
The non-specific defense mechanisms that organisms are born with and provide immediate protection against infection.
Acquired (Adaptive) Immune System
The immune response that develops over time and is specific to particular pathogens.
Barriers
Defenses that prevent pathogens from entering the body, including anatomical, physical, chemical, cellular, and mechanical barriers.
Epidermis
The outer layer of skin that provides a protective barrier against pathogens.
Phagocytosis
The process by which certain cells engulf and digest pathogens.
Normal Microbiota
The community of microorganisms that normally live on or in the human body, helping to prevent pathogenic infections.
Lymphatic System
A network of vessels that carries lymph, a fluid that circulates immune cells and helps maintain fluid balance in the body.
Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs)
Molecules distinct to pathogens that are recognized by the immune system.
Pathogen Recognition Receptors (PRRs)
Receptors on white blood cells that detect PAMPs and initiate immune responses.
Reticuloendothelial System (RES)
A network of cells that includes macrophages and is involved in phagocytosis and immune response.
