Population
The entire group of people that is of interest to the researcher.
Sample
The subsection of the population. The sample should be representative of the population it was taken from.
Sampling
The process of selecting participants from a population of research interest that will be used in a study.
Random sampling
Everyone in the population has an equal chance of being selected.
Stratified sampling
Researcher identifies different demographic groups (strata) within the population and works out the proportions required for each characteristic.
Convenience sampling
Participants who are easily accessible are selected.
Snowball sampling
Initial participants are chosen and each participant encourages other people to contact the researcher and join the sample.
