Baucis and Philemon - Assessable lines

46 “We are gods,” they said, “and the impious neighborhood shall pay the deserved penalty.
47 But to you it will be granted to be free
48 from this disaster...”

49 modo vestra relinquite tecta
50 ac nostros comitate gradus et in ardua montis
51 ite simul!" parent ambo baculisque levati
nituntur longo vestigia ponere clivo.

49 Only leave your home,
50 and follow our steps, and go together up the steep mountain!”
51 Both obeyed, and lifted by their staffs, they struggled
to place their steps on the long slope.

52 tantum aberant summo, quantum semel ire sagitta
53 missa potest: flexere oculos et mersa palude
54 cetera prospiciunt, tantum sua tecta manere,
55 dumque ea mirantur, dum deflent fata suorum...

52 They were just as far from the summit as an arrow can travel when shot once,
53 when they turned their eyes and saw the land submerged in swamp.
54 Everything else had disappeared—only their own house remained,
55 and while they marveled at it, while they wept for the fate of their neighbors...

57 vertitur in templum: furcas subiere columnae,

57 was turned into a temple: the forked supports became columns,

60 Then the son of Saturn (Jupiter) spoke with a calm expression:
61 “Speak, righteous old man, and you, woman worthy of a just husband,
62 say what you wish.” After speaking a few words with Baucis,
63 Philemon revealed their shared request to the gods:
64 “We ask to be your priests and guard your shrine,
65 and since we have lived in harmony for so many years,
66 may the same hour take us both, and may I never see
67 my wife’s tomb, nor be buried by her.”

68 Their prayer was fulfilled: they became guardians of the temple,
69 as long as life was given. Freed by age and time,
70 they happened to be standing before the sacred steps...

71 as they were recounting the events of the place, Baucis saw Philemon sprouting leaves,
72 and old Philemon saw Baucis turning leafy too.
73 Now as twin tree tops rose above their faces,
74 they exchanged words as long as they could—“Farewell,”
75 and “O dear spouse,” they said together, and at the same time,
76 the bark covered their mouths and hid them.
