Dilute solution meaning
Have a high concentration of water molecules
concentrated solution meaning
have a low concentration of water molecules
Osmosis definition
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution though a partially permeable membrane
What can osmosis be demonstrated by?
using a visking tube filled with a solution placed in a beaker of pure water
What are plant and animal cells surrounded by?
a partially permeable plasma membrane . This allows water and other small molecules to diffuse across.
what does the cell wall do in a plant cell?
offers support and protection and stops the cell from expanding
osmosis in animal cells
since they don’t have a cell wall, they burst if water moves in and shrink if too much leaves.
what happens to animal cells in dilute solutions?
osmosis can cause animal cells such as red blood cells to swell up and burst.
what happens to animal cells in concentrated solutions?
water loss causes the cells to shrink. when this happens in red blood cells, its called crenation.
hypertonic
solution outside cell is more concentrated relative to solution inside cell.
hypnotic
solution outside is less concentrated relative to solution inside.
isotonic
solutions are of equal concentration
osmosis
when water enters a plant cell and pushes on the cell wall causing the cell to swell.
Turgid
A membrane that allows some substances to pass though and other cannot
plasmoyed
the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
partially permeable.
the movement of water molecules from an area of their high concentration to an area of their low concentration
diffusion
when water leaves a plant cell, contents shrink and the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall/
