Psychodynamic theory
Focuses on unconscious processes and childhood experiences.
Psychoanalytic theory
Freud’s original theory; behavior is influenced by unconscious drives.
Unconscious mind
Part of the mind holding thoughts outside of awareness, yet influencing behavior.
Conscious mind
Thoughts and feelings we are aware of.
Id
Primitive desires (pleasure principle).
Ego
Rational self (reality principle).
Superego
Morality (ideal self).
Iceberg Model of the Mind
Freud's model suggesting the majority of our mind is unconscious, similar to an iceberg.
Repression
Pushing disturbing thoughts out of awareness.
Denial
Refusing to accept reality.
Displacement
Redirecting emotions to a safer outlet.
Analytical psychology
Jung’s theory; focused on balancing conscious and unconscious.
Collective unconscious
Shared, inherited part of the unconscious with universal memories.
Archetypes
Universal, recurring symbols or images.
Observational learning
Learning by watching, exemplified by Bandura's Bobo Doll experiment.
Operant Conditioning
Learning through consequences, including reinforcement and punishment.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
A framework outlining stages of human needs from physiological to self-actualization.
Client-Centered Therapy
Therapy focused on empathy, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard.
Logotherapy
Focuses on helping individuals find meaning in life.
Identity vs. role confusion
Erikson's stage emphasizing exploration of personal identity during adolescence.
