Allusion
a reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature.
Personification
a figure of speech where animals, ideas or inanimate objects are given human characteristics.
symbolism
using something specific to stand for something else, especially an idea. A a person, place, object or action that for something beyond itself.
allegory
a story in which people, things and actions represent an idea about life;
alliteration
the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words (tongue twisters)
imagery
the use of words and phrases that appeal to the five senses.
metaphor
a type of figurative language in which a comparison is made between two things that are essentially unalike but may have one quality in common
simile
a type of figurative language that makes a comparison between two otherwise unlike objects or ideas by connecting them with the words "like" or "as."
Literary Foil
a character who contrasts with another character, usually the main character, to highlight or emphasize certain aspects of their personality or traits.

A narrative device that hints at coming events; often builds suspense or anxiety in the reader.
