Energy Transfer by Conduction
The process by which energy is transferred through a material.
Thermal Conductivity
The higher the thermal conductivity of a material, the higher the rate of energy transfer by conduction.
Metals
Good conductors of energy, allowing for a high rate of energy transfer.
Insulators
Poor conductors of energy, resulting in low energy transfer.
Infrared Radiation
All bodies emit and absorb infrared radiation; the hotter the body, the more it radiates.
Perfect Black Body
An object that absorbs all radiation incident on it.
Specific Heat Capacity
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of a substance by one degree Celsius.
Loft Insulation
Reduces energy transferred through the roof.
Cavity Wall Insulation
Reduces energy transfer through walls by filling the space between outer and inner walls.
Double Glazing
Reduces energy transfer through windows.
