Email Formatting Standards
Laws regarding the layout of email messages and how to handle attachments.
Email Protocols
Protocols that determine how emails are transmitted between servers, including POP3, IMAP, and SMTP.
MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions)
A standard that allows for the embedding of non-ASCII encoding in email messages.
Message User Agent (MUA)
The user-facing part of an email system that formats messages and interacts with the recipient's interface.
Message Transfer Agent (MTA)
Relays mail between servers and makes routing decisions for message delivery.
Mail Delivery Agent (MDA)
Responsible for transferring messages from the Message Handling Service to the Message Store.
Administrative Management Domain (ADMD)
An Internet email provider which may have unique policies, including internal organizational and public email services.
Email Security Problems
Issues such as spam, phishing attacks, and email viruses that threaten the integrity of email communication.
Phishing
A social engineering attack that deceives recipients into providing sensitive information by visiting bogus websites.
Spam
Unsolicited email that consumes bandwidth and server resources, often containing fraudulent content.
Firewall Rule Format
Structure for defining firewall rules that control access to and from a network.
Three-Legged Firewall
A firewall configuration that includes an internal network, a DMZ (demilitarized zone), and a connection to the external Internet.
Internet Mail Architecture
System governing how emails are transmitted between users through various agents and protocols.
Traffic Filtering Mechanisms
Different methods for controlling and managing data flow in a network, including packet filtering and session filtering.
Email Chain Letters
Email requests encouraging recipients to forward the message to others, sometimes with false claims of benefits.
DNS (Domain Name System) in Email
A system that translates hostnames into IP addresses, which is essential for routing emails.
Spoofing
A technique used to disguise a communication from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source.
Tunneling
A method to send data over a network in a manner that conceals it within another protocol.
