The liturgy celebrated on Holy Saturday night. It celebrates the coming of the light of Christ into the world and is also the time when adults and older children are recieved into the Church through the Sacraments of Initiation.
Easter Vigil:
Also called the Ester candle, that is the large, tall candle lit at the Easter Vigil by a flame from the new fire; the symbol of Christ.
Paschal Candle:
Sung during the Easter Vigil, this triumphant hymn of praise proclaims, "Christ is Risen!" It announces that on this night, humanity and all creation receive the Good News of salvation.
Exsultet:
A statement that seems contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is true.
Paradox:
The first announcement of Good News. It refers to the passage in the Book of Genesis (3:15) that announces the future coming of a messiah and savior.
Protoevangelium:
A solemn agreement between human beings or between God and human beings in which mutual commitments are made.An extension of kinship by oath, a way of swearing someone into your family or family formation by oath swearing.
Covenant:
The discernment of God's worik in the Old Testament as a prefiguation of what he accomplished through Jesus Christ in the fullmess of time. Typology illuminates the unity of God's plan in the two Testaments, but does not devalue the Old Covenant or its ongoing relevance and value for the Jewish people.
Typology:
An agreement made between two equal parties binding them in mutual respect and cooperation.
Parity treaty:
An agreement made by two unequal parties. The superior power receives absolute loyalty, service, and submission from the less party the vassal.
Vassal treaty:
The covenant established with the Israelites at Mount Sinai that renewed God's covenant with Abraham's descendants. The Sinai Covenant established the Israelites as God's Chosen People.
Sinai Covenant:
Used to describe something (such as an agreement) that will happen only if something else will happen.
Conditional:
A hebrew word for mercy that expresses God's loving forgiveness for the Chosen People.
Hesed:
The eleven men and one waoman who served the Hebrew people as tribal leaders,military commanders, arbiters of disputes, and enliveners of faith.
Judges:
A person God chooses to speak his message of salvation.
Prophet:
The unconditional covenant made between God and David in which God promised David that he would establish an everlasting kingdom through David's descendants, and that the Messiah would come from David's lineage.
Davidic Covenant:
Hebrew word for "anointed one". The equivalent Greek term is Christos. Jesus is the Christ and the Messiah because he is the Anointed One who brings salvation through his life, death, and resurrection.
Messiah:
belief in one God
Monotheism:
Hebrew word for covenant, meaning shackle or chain. Conveys the idea that Covenants were a way of binding God with his people

Suffering and death, concupiscence, loss of original holiness and justice, God did not abandon humanity but promised redemption through Jesus
What is the Protoevangelium?
The first time God tells us of the promise of a savior who will defeat evil and it’s the first announcement of the Good News of the coming of Jesus.

Woman = Mary
Offspring = Jesus
Serpent = Satan

Celebrates the victory of Christ over sin and death

How are covenants relational?
Based on relationships, each party has roles and responsibilities, covenants with humanity, God takes on the role of leader and provider

To be their God if they follow his law and conditional

What is the result of the Mosaic covenant?
God unties himself with the Israelites through the gift of the law, which will help them avoid sin and live as God’s people.
What are the features of a parity treaty?
2 equal nations or rulers, mutual, based on equality, alliance, peace, or cooperation, both parties have equal responsibility
What are the features of a vassal treaty?
A powerful nation(Lord) and a weaker nation, hierachical: lord + vassal, loyalty, obedience, protect, vassal must obey, serve, and pay tribute, Lord protects
What did God promise David?
An everlasting kingdom through Davids bloodline and unconditional

God establishes his external Kingdom through the life and mission of Jesus Christ, who is King in David’s line
