What is a Folkway?

routine conventions of every day life like saying thank you or please

What is a Mores?

Norms that are central to society and hold deep meaning like marriage

What is Social Structure?

basic cosial organization like low middle and upper class

What is a Class System

Where someones birth does not determine where they will end up or rules arent strict

What is a Caste System?

Social positions determine your palce in society you dont really move up or down

What is Social Mobility?

the extent to how you can move up or down in the social system

What is Class Consciousness

Tendency of individuals to determine who they are based on where they are born.

What is the language of time

how time is used as a form of communication

What is the language of space

how personal space is seen in different cultures

What is Power Distance?

How society treats those above you. some cultures have higher respect for posissions of power

indiviudals vs society priortization

the extent to the risk tollarence of a country

they accept delayed gratification of their material, social, and emotional needs

how willing a society to wanting to live in the present instead of long term thinking

jsut means a culture is impatient

it is a study that graphed different cultures leadership style

tells you cultural differences

Is culture constant?

no it is ever evolving

What is Convergence Hypothesis?

as cultures become more wealthy and connected the behaviors and cultural ideas will start to look more like each other.

How a society deals with the fact that people are unequal in physical and intellectual capabilities – how they embrace hierarchy

Power distance

How a society interprets the relationship between gender and work roles (tough/power vs. tender/ nurture)

Masculinity versus femininity

Social organization (individualistic/ collectivist and stratification)

Social rules and guidelines that prescribe appropriate behavior – ie. shaking hands when meeting

Norm

An understanding of how cultural differences across and within nations can affect the way in which life is lived and business is practiced

A type of social structure which divides people on the basis of inherited social status

Caste system

How a society suppresses gratification of needs and regulates by means of strict social norms – enjoying life, having fun

Indulgence

The routine conventions of everyday life- ie. attitude towards time (elastic vs. exact)

Folkways

A system by which society ranks categories of people in a social hierarchy

Social strata

A set of structures, institutions and processes built into a society that promote the stratification of people into socioeconomic classes. Represents the position a person has at birth but can be changed

Class system

Abstract ideas of what is believed to be good, right and desirable

Values

A system of shared beliefs and rituals that are concerned with the realm of the sacred

Religion

A system of values and norms that are shared among a group of people and when taken together constitute a design for living

Culture

Condition by which people tend to perceive themselves in terms of their background and social position
