What opposition was there to the NHS?
Many doctors were concerned that they would be employed by the government so worried that they would lose their independence and receive less pay. Some politicians also argued that the cost of the NHS would be too large and that taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay

After opening in 1948 in July, it allowed everyone in the country to receive free healthcare. To ensure that the hospitals would be fully staffed, workers from the Caribbean, Ireland, South Asia and Africa were employed and encouraged to work in UK hospitals

Since Britain had use come out of the Second World War, there was substantial pressure on the UK government which meant that charges for prescriptions were introduced to help pay for the Korean War - this led Bevan to resign

It runs many public health campaigns to encourage people to lead healthy lives by suggesting people to stop smoking, practise safe sex, get vaccinated and more
Why is the NHS spending more on healthcare in recent years?
People are living longer so it is common for old people to need more treatments and medications to keep them healthy, the UK has a higher population, new medicines are often more expensive
What changes to the law did the government make to ensure that people were healthier?
Tobacco advertising was banned in 2005 and smoking in enclosed public places was banned in 2007. In 2015, drivers are no longer allowed to smoke in cars with children inside (due to second hand smoke inhalation). Sugar taxes have been introduced in fizzy drinks to help prevent tooth decay. It is also encouraged to check for early signs of cancer as it prevents expensive treatments being needed
