What is a state
A unit of political authority that is classed as an actor in the international system. It has absolute power over it’s territory and population, and has the same amount of sovereignty with other states in the international system
What is a nation?
A group of people who share common ties of culture, language or history. There can be many different nations within a state
What is sovereign equality?
The principle that all states are equal and should be treated as equals in the international community

What is permanent population?
a stable population located in a particular area
What is a defined territory?
A state must have a clear territory that it controls within a clearly defined boarder
What is an effective Government?
A state needs a functioning Government that can effectively govern the territory it controls
What is diplomatic relations?
A state will be able to carry out diplomatic relations with other states by having foreign embassies and diplomats to represent its interests
What is an example of a territory that is not a state and why?
Gibraltar because it does not have diplomatic relations
What is not from the Montevideo convention but still an important factor?
Recognition because states cannot carry out diplomatic relations without state recognition
