Cicero Against Catiline

Sit denique scriptum in fronte unius cuiusque quid de re publica sentiat; nam rem publicam laboribus consiliisque meis ex igne atque ferro ereptam esse videtis.

Let it be at last written on the forehead of everyone what he feels about the republic; for yall see that the republic has been snatched from the fire and the sword by my labors and plans

Haec iam expōnam breviter ut scīre possītis quā ratiōne comprehēnsa sint.

now i will explain these things briefly so that yall may be able to know by which reason they were arrested

Semper providi quo modo in tantis insidiis salvi esse possemus.

I always foresaw in what way we were able to be safe in such great treacheries

Omnes dies consumpsi ut viderem quid coniurati acturi essent.

I consumed all the days so that I might see what the conspirators were about to do

Denique litteras intercipere potui quae ad Catilinam a Lentulo aliisque coniuratis missae erant.

finally i was able to intercept the letters that had been sent to Catiline by Lentulus and other conspirators

Tum, coniuratis comprehensis et senatu convocato, contendi in senatum, ostendi litteras a Lentulo, quaesivi cognosceretne signum.

then, with the conspirators arrested and the senate convened, i hurried into the senate, i showed the letters to Lantulus, I asked him whether he recognized the seal

Dixit se cognoscere; sed primo dubitavit et negavit se de his rebus responsurum esse.

he said that he recognized; but at first hesitated and denied that he would respond about these matters

Mox autem ostendit quanta esset vīs cōnscientiae; nam repente mollītus est atque omnem rem nārrāvit.

soon, however, he showed how great was the force of his conscience; for suddenly he was calmed and he told the whole matter

Tum ceteri coniurati tam furtim inter se aspiciebant ut non ab aliis indicari sed indicare se ipsi viderentur.

then the other conspirators were glancing among themselves so secretly that they themselves seemed not to be accused by others but to accuse themselves
