Reflexive Pronoun
A pronoun that reflects action back upon the subject of its sentence or clause, e.g., myself.
Intensive Pronoun
A pronoun that emphasizes a noun or pronoun in the same sentence, e.g., herself.
Demonstrative Pronoun
A pronoun that points out specific persons, places, things, or ideas, e.g., this, those.
Indefinite Pronoun
A pronoun that refers to unidentified persons, places, things, or ideas, e.g., each, most.
Interrogative Pronoun
A pronoun that introduces a question, e.g., who, what.
Relative Pronoun
A pronoun that introduces a subordinate clause, e.g., who, that.
Action Verb
A verb that expresses a physical or mental action.
Transitive Verb
An action verb that appears with a direct object.
Intransitive Verb
An action verb that does not have a direct object.
Linking Verb
A verb that links the subject of a sentence to a word in the predicate.
Auxiliary Verb
A helping verb combined with verbs to form verb phrases, e.g., is, has.
Preposition
A word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence.
Compound Preposition
A preposition formed from more than one word, e.g., according to.
Prepositional Phrase
Consists of a preposition, its object, and any modifiers of the object.
Adverb
A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
Coordinating Conjunction
A conjunction that connects words or groups of words that have equal importance.
Correlative Conjunction
Pairs of conjunctions that join words or groups of words, e.g., either… or.
Subordinating Conjunction
A conjunction that introduces subordinate clauses and joins them to independent clauses.
Interjection
A word or phrase that expresses an emotion or strong feeling.
Noun
A word that represents a person, place, thing, or idea.
