Oxidizing Agent
A substance that causes another to lose electrons (be oxidized).
Reducing Agent
A substance that causes another to gain electrons (be reduced).
Galvanic Cell
A type of battery that converts chemical energy into electrical energy through spontaneous reactions.
Oxidation
The loss of electrons from a species.
Reduction
The gain of electrons by a species.
Standard Reduction Potential
The tendency of a species to be reduced, measured in volts.
Half-Reaction
A reaction that shows either the loss or gain of electrons for a particular species.
Electrolyte
A substance that produces ions in solution and allows for the conduction of electricity.
Anode
The negative terminal of a battery where oxidation occurs.
Cathode
The positive terminal of a battery where reduction occurs.
Spontaneous Reaction
A reaction that occurs without needing external energy, often indicated by a positive redox sum.
Lithium-Ion Battery
A rechargeable battery with high energy density and efficiency.
Lead-Acid Battery
A type of battery commonly used in cars, consisting of lead and lead dioxide plates.
Environmental Impact
Effects caused by battery production and disposal, including pollution and habitat destruction.
Battery Recycling
The process of collecting and reprocessing used batteries to prevent environmental harm.
