What are the leadership styles
Trait theory, Situational Theory, Functional Theory.
Trait Theory
Natural born leaders who assume leadership no matter what the situation is
Situational Theory
They assume leadership during the crisis then blend back into the crowd when the crisis is over
Functional theory
Shared leadership between the leader and the group members
Social Institutions
an organized and establish social system that meets one or more of a society basic needs.
What are some social institutions
Family- Socializes children to benefit society. Government- Maintain laws and order (police)
Education- Teachers work-related skills
Religion- Shared beliefs related to a higher power
Economy- Goods and services society needs
Works setting- Pays us for the work we do
Social Groups
Friends, Families, Work Groups, clubs, Religious Groups, Athletic teams, Political Parties, Financial organizations
(Point-Each of us is a member of many social grps but we identify more closely with some grps more then others)
Primary Groups
Are small groups and intimate and meet or emotional needs. Ex Family & Friends
What a family should give us
Support, Guidance, Love & respect, Protect us, encouragement, values to live by, positive self-image
What a family should NOT give us
Constant Criticism, Feeling of guilt, No values system, Physical & Emotional abuse, Make you an adult to soon
Secondary Groups
Are large groups and help fulfill our specific goals or task. Ex Working together to earn a grade, Doing a presentation
In- groups
Share a sense of identity and “we-nes” Ex. popularity, Privilege, sorority, Athletes
Out- Groups
people treat negatively. Ex unpopular, Poor, Not accepted, no privilege
deviance/ Dev Behavior
Is a violation of social norms ( Unhealthy Behavior that goes against society rules and values social norms are created by us)
Crime
is a violation of society formal laws( Behavior that goes against the official laws that society creates)

Texting while texting, being part of a gang, cheating on an exam, Driving over the speed limit
Merton’s Strain Theory of Deviance Definition
Some people may engage in deviant behavior such as selling drugs, burglary etc when they find it harder and harder to succeed and pay their bills
