Connective Tissue
The most abundant and widely distributed primary tissue in the body, responsible for supporting various structures.
Extracellular Matrix
The non-cellular component present within all connective tissues, consisting of ground substance and connective tissue fibers.
Fibroblasts
A common cell type found in connective tissue that secretes connective tissue fibers and ground substance.
Adipocytes
Fat cells that store energy and provide cushioning and insulation.
Mast Cells
Cells involved in immune responses, known for releasing histamine and mediating inflammation.
Macrophages
Immune cells that perform phagocytosis, destroying foreign particles and damaged cells.
Collagen Fibers
Strong and abundant fibers in connective tissue that provide rigidity and strength.
Elastic Fibers
Fibers that allow stretch and recoil, found in structures like the aorta and vocal cords.
Reticular Fibers
Thin, branched fibers that form a supporting network in various organs, such as lymph nodes.
Loose Connective Tissue
A type of connective tissue characterized by a spacious structure with fewer fibers and cells.
Dense Connective Tissue
A type of connective tissue with densely packed fibers, providing strong support and resistance to stretching.
Cartilage
A flexible connective tissue that provides support and protection but lacks blood supply for self-repair.
Bone
A rigid connective tissue that supports and protects the body, composed of cells, a bony matrix, and blood supply.
Blood
A fluid connective tissue that transports nutrients, gases, and wastes throughout the body.
Hyaline Cartilage
The most abundant type of cartilage found in the rib cage and joints, providing flexible support.
Fibrocartilage
A type of cartilage that withstands pressure and provides support, found in intervertebral discs.
Elastic Cartilage
A type of cartilage that maintains shape while allowing flexibility, found in the ear and epiglottis.
