adaptive trait

ancestor

descendant species

An entire species that has died out completely.
fossil

generation

natural selection
The process in which the distribution of traits within a population changes over many generations.
organisms

A group of the same type (species) of organisms living in the same area.

An older population from which one or two newer species descended.
speciation
The process by which one population evolves into two or more different species.

A group of organisms of the same kind that can reproduce with one another.
