Pre-reading strategies

Strategies used to get an overview of the text.

Previewing

It is taking a sneak peek of the text, "to look before." It involves the clues about the title, clues about the front and back cover, author of the book, and table of contents, pictures, and other illustrations.

Skimming

It is getting the gist of something else. To do this, one must look at the main points of the reading material and identify the ideas that develop it. Consider reading the first and last paragraph and headings, subheadings, titles, subtitles, and illustrations.

Scanning

Schemata

It is the certainty to understand new material because of previous knowledge related to it. It also categorizes your experience.

Assimilation

Adding new information to past knowledge.

Accommodation

It is replacing existing knowledge.

Cultural and semantic barriers

Formal

It is the knowledge of how a text is logically organized to make it understandable to readers (rhetorical patterns for writing). Examples are narration and description.

Linguistic

It is the decoding of certain features to understand how words are organized and fit together in a sentence. Examples are language and grammar.
