Lean production
A set of strategies to reduce waste in the production process.
Quality Management
A set of strategies to ensure that products meet or exceed customers' expectations.
Continuous Improvement (Kaizen)
A quality management approach where employees are encouraged to always seek and implement production improvements, such as reducing waste of time and or of materiais.
Efficiency
A business is more efficient if it can produce more products (output) using the same or fewer resources (input).
Toyota's 7 Main Categories of Waste
Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Over-processing, Over-production, and Defects.
Transportation (Waste)
Moving components between processes unnecessarily.
Inventory (Waste)
Excessive stocks of materials leading to storage costs.
Motion (Waste)
Unnecessary movement contributing to product injury.
Waiting (Waste)
Delays in the production process.
Over-processing (Waste)
Adding unrequired features without added value.
Over-production (Waste)
Producing inventory before it is needed.
Defects (Waste)
Finished goods that do not meet quality control standards.
