French

• wanted to trade

British

• came for freedom→ and to escape the class system they had to (finnancial & religious freedom)

• because of how bad England was we speak English today because English overwhelms the area

• british end up dominating the area \

• had to belong to the anglican church in order to participate in society

Anglican Church

• created because none of king henry wives could give him children and the catholic church said he couldn’t divorce so he made his own 

• Became so infused with your life so if you had a problem religiously you basically had to surrender your public life (disagreement could mean loosing status or power)

Anglican church→

Puritans wanted to purify Anglican Church (wore black believed in not bringing attention to themselves)→ Seperatists wanted to seperate the Church

King of England wanted to get rid of Puritists and Seperatists so..

he granted them charters in the new world

England massive class system

• whatever class you were born in you couldn’t change it

• it was damaging to a family if you were in a merchant class and married down

• if you married a higher class it was huge

• you could never have upward mobility

• “rags to riches”

Georgia

• Started by British because they wanted to make Georgia into a Colony

• due to England emptying our their prisons→

• they said you can stay in prison for how ever many years or we’ll forgive your debt and you can move to Georgia debtors came

• filled entire colony of just people who were escaping their debt, didn’t want to finish their sentences

• almost all people were in prison before

Native Americans didn’t have..

• immunity to diseases (small pox)

• 80% died when these came

• alot of native americans went west before they could be

Spanish

• wanted the gold

• when they couldn’t find the gold the did conversion

Today we are mostly..

Jamestown

• alot of people died because they weren’t prepared for the new world

• Govenor stuck a sign in the ground that said “Work or Starve” (“Thee that will not worke shall not eate)→saved Jamestown

Plymith

• much smaller than Jamestown

• → Later obsorbed by Jamestown

• Separatists group

• comes over after Jamestown

Mayflower

• comes over

• several die on way over

• king wanted them to leave so he promises them a charter

• get dropped off at wrong spot way more north then charter→ driver refuses to go down because where you landed was w

• they let the pilgrims off at plymith

the pilgrims were left off at

• they had to come up with the Mayflower Compact because they did not have a charter for that plymith rock (extremely unique)

Mayflower Compact

• a group/community contract that was signed by the men as a covenant of each other for the ruling of their area because they didn't have the charter anymore

• first governing document in this hemisphere

• first time they get the idea of “we the people”

• covenant of God (saying God will make you a deal we’ll commit this land you can return for your blessing)
