Thorax
Barrel-shaped cavity forming the upper portion of the torso.
Thoracic Inlet
Superior boundary between the neck and thorax at the level of the first ribs.
Thoracic Outlet
Inferior muscular boundary separating the thoracic and abdominal cavity, formed by the diaphragm.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Medical condition that compresses the vessels passing in and out of the thoracic inlet.
Anterior Median (Midsternal) Line
Imaginary line signifying the intersection of the midsagittal plane with the sternum anteriorly.
Midclavicular Line
Imaginary line passing vertically through the midpoint of the clavicle.
Anterior Axillary Line
Imaginary line passing vertically through the anterior axillary fold made by the inferolateral border of the pectoralis major muscle.
Posterior Axillary Line
Imaginary line that lines up with the posterior axillary fold formed by the latissimus dorsi muscle.
True Ribs
Ribs with a direct costal attachment to the sternum.
False Ribs
Ribs whose costal cartilages fused together to create a single indirect attachment to the sternum.
Floating Ribs
Ribs that have no attachment to the sternum and remain suspended inside muscular sheaths.
Head of the Rib
Portion of the rib that articulates with the vertebrae at the level of the intervertebral disc.
Tubercle
Point of muscular attachment and articulation with the transverse process of the inferior vertebrae.
Costal Angle
Greatest amount of curvature along the body of the rib.
Costal Groove
Notch located at the deep inferior surface of each rib that accommodates the intercostal neurovascular bundle.
Intercostal Neurovascular Bundle
Intercostal vein, artery, and nerve.
Costal Cartilages
Projections of hyaline cartilage that fuse with the rib laterally and insert into the concave surfaces along the border of the sternum.
Costal Margin
Inferior border of fused costal cartilages
Manubrium
Upper bone of the sternum, also known as the sword handle.
Manubriosternal Joint
Synarthrotic joint where the manubrium articulates with the body of the sternum.
Sternal Angle
Palpable apex at the junction of the manubrium and body of the sternum, also known as the angle of Lewis.
Xiphoid Process
Tip of the sternum, easily palpable at the junction of the left and right costal margins.
