Describe TWO ways that the process of globalization may produce new forms of cultural ideas and practices that affect a city’s cultural landscape.

One way globalization can impact the cultural landscape is when religions diffuse to new areas, causing religious buildings in the new city to look similar to those in the original city. For example, the spread of Roman Catholicism into San Jose has led to the creation of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph, which has similar pillars and interior murals to the famous Catholic landmark, St. Peter’s Basilica, in Rome.

Another way globalization can impact the cultural landscape is through new technologies promoting globally standardized architectural styles (i.e., modernism), leading to a decrease in traditional buildings. For example, the rapid industrialization of South Korea caused many blocky, multi-story apartment buildings to be constructed in major cities. Therefore, cities that used to be full of traditional houses called hanok now have high- rise buildings resembling those in Western countries.

Explain how the use of the English language relates to the cultural convergence between the United Kingdom and India.

English is an essential part of culture in the United Kingdom and came to be used in India after the British colonization of India. English is taught in Indian schools and many legal procedures in India are carried out in English, similar to England. Nowadays, English is considered an official language in India, which shows how English culture and modern Indian culture are becoming more similar through the common use of English.

Explain the degree to which features in a cultural landscape relate to the process of relocation diffusion.

Features in a cultural landscape greatly relate to the process of relocation diffusion. When people migrate to an area, they will try to replicate the cultural landscape in their home country in the new area. One way this could happen is when speakers of a non-dominant language in a region immigrate to that region and put up signs for shops, restaurants, etc. in their ethnic language (i.e., Little Saigon, a Vietnamese ethnic enclave has many shops with Vietnamese signage).

Explain a limitation of using the images to understand how imperialism spread cultural patterns and processes from the location in Image 2 to the location in Image 1.

A limitation of using these images to understand the spread of cultural traits through imperialism is that they only show how architecture was spread through imperialism. It doesn’t show how nonmaterial beliefs and values spread. One such trait that isn’t shown through these images is the increased preference for lighter skin color in India, caused by British colonizers imposing the belief that they are more superior partially because their skin color is lighter.
