Two factors before 1450 that account for the pattern of caravanserai shown on the map are the mongols protecting trade and the middle of east and Persia was being protected by the Muslim Calaphate. The Mongols provided tax breaks to merchants, standardized weights and measures, and gave financial backing to caravans. The Muslim Calaphate had a similar dynamic because Arab and Persian Muslim merchants were prominent. Tjhe House of Wisdom (800-1200) was a major intellectual center during Islamic Golden Age which could also explain the pattern.

One specific example of a transportation innovation is the Dhow ship. The Arabs popularized the Dhow ship which was able to tack against the wind because of its advanced lateen sail. A specific example of a commercial innovation is Bills of Exchange. This was a commercial innovation because merchants used bills of exchange to purchase imported goods without the hazards of carrying an expensive medium of exchange.
