Arabian Peninsula
A region characterized by dry and inhospitable landscapes, but with agricultural development in coastal areas.
Pre-Islamic Arabia
A time before Islam where trading was common, wealthy merchants were elites, and polytheism and animism were prevalent.
Mecca
A significant city for trading and the site of the Ka’aba, a religious shrine for polytheistic worship.
Muhammad
The founder of Islam, who received revelations from God through the Angel Gabriel and whose teachings were recorded in the Qu’ran.
Qu’ran
The holy book of Islam, considered the literal word of God as revealed to Muhammad.
Umma
The community of Muslim believers; cohesion was strengthened by religious belief.
Five Pillars of Islam
The basic acts of worship and framework of a Muslim's life, including declaration of faith, prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, and charity.
Caliph
The political and religious successor to Muhammad, elected to lead the Muslim community.
Sunni Muslims
A branch of Islam that believes the caliph should be chosen from the community, supporting Abu Bakr as the first caliph.
Shia Muslims
A branch of Islam that believes leadership should remain within the Prophet Muhammad's family, supporting Ali as the rightful successor.
Abbasid Caliphate
A period following the Umayyad Caliphate, characterized by a flourishing of culture and the establishment of Baghdad as a capital.
Ridda Wars
Wars fought to suppress revolts and maintain Islamic control shortly after Muhammad's death.
Islamic Sufi Missionaries
Traveling preachers who spread Islam peacefully, especially in regions like Southeast Asia.
Sikhism
A religion that emerged in the 15th century, blending aspects of Hinduism and Islam.
Swahili States
Coastal trading states in East Africa that developed a unique culture from Arab and Bantu influences.
Ezra the Prophet
A revered figure in Jewish tradition, recognized for leading prayers and overseeing the establishment of worship practices.
Sultan
A monarch or ruler in Islamic states, often possessing both political and military power.
Mitrates
Social policies in some African societies that allowed for a division of labor by gender.
Pax Mongolia

Crusades
