Genetic map
A representation of the arrangement of genes on a chromosome.
Physical map
A map that provides the physical distance between genes, measured in base pairs.
Linked genes
Genes that are located close together on the same chromosome and tend to be inherited together.
Independent assortment
Mendelian principle that states genes for different traits can segregate independently during gamete formation.
CentiMorgan (cM)
A unit of measure for genetic linkage, defined as a 1% chance of recombination occurring between two genes.
Chiasma
The point at which two homologous non-sister chromatids exchange genetic material during meiosis.
Recombination frequency
The percentage of recombinant offspring among the total offspring, used to determine the distance between genes.
Interlocus distance
The physical distance between two loci (gene locations) on a chromosome.
Single Crossovers (SCO)
Events where two non-sister chromatids exchange segments during meiosis, resulting in recombinant gametes.
Double Crossovers (DCO)
Events involving two crossover exchanges between non-sister chromatids.
Mapping
The process of determining the positions of genes on a chromosome.
Coefficient of coincidence (C)
The ratio of observed double crossovers to the expected number of double crossovers.
Interference (I)
The phenomenon where one crossover event reduces the likelihood of another crossover occurring nearby.
