What is running water underground?
Groundwater, which mimics the surface topography and exists in a zone of saturation below the water table.
What is the water table?
The boundary between the zone of saturation and the zone of aeration (capillary fringe).
What defines the zone of saturation?
It is the region below the water table where all pore spaces are filled with water.
What is porosity?
The network of pore spaces within a material, such as soil or rock.
What is permeability?
The ability of pore spaces to be connected, allowing water to flow through them.
What makes a good aquifer?
High porosity and high permeability, allowing water to move easily.
What is an aquitard?
A layer with low porosity and low permeability that restricts water flow, making it a poor aquifer.
What governs all groundwater flow?
Darcy's Law, which describes the relationship between groundwater discharge, land slope, and land area.
