interphase
The cell is just living its life, growing, and making a copy of its DNA to get ready for division.
Prophase
The DNA condenses into visible chromosomes, and the nucleus starts to break down. Spindle fibers (tiny ropes) begin to form.
Early Metaphase
The spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes and help move them around.
Metaphase
All the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell like they're ready for a race.
Early Anaphase
The chromosomes start to split apart, moving towards opposite sides of the cell.
Anaphase
The chromosome halves (now called chromatids) are pulled completely to opposite sides.
Telophase
Two new nuclei start to form around the separated chromosomes. The cell is almost done dividing.
Cytokinesis
The cell fully splits into two new identical cells, each with its own nucleus.
