(1) Aphrodite, goddess of the embroidered throne,

(2) Daughter of Zeus, weaver of wiles

(3) Queen, I beg you:

(4) So not overpower my heart with anguish, with affliction,

(5) But come here, to me, if you ever came before,

(Space) (6) From far away and came at my request,

(7) Leaving your father’s golden chambers

(8) Yoking your chariot:

(9) Swift, beautiful sparrows

(10) Their close-packed wings

(11) Whirling across the dark earth,

(12) Brought you from the heavens

(13) Down through the spreading sky

(14) Quickly they came.

(Space) (15) You, blessed woman,

(16) Smiling all over your immortal face,

(17) You asked me then

(18) What was I suffering?

(19) What had made me call you

(20) This time?

(Space) (21) What did my despairing heart

(22) Desperately want to happen?

(23) Whom do you want me to bring back to you this time?

(24) Who, Sappho, is hurting you now?

(Space) (25) “If she runs from you,

(26) soon she will pursue;

(27) if she does not accept gifts now

(28) soon she will be giving them

(29) if she does not love you now,

(30) she will love you soon

(31) even if she does not want to.”
