Autocratic

Setting specific objectives and allocating tasks to individuals, with the leader expecting employees to do as their told, when they are told.

Employee is not involved in any decisions.

Can be restricting and demotivating for employees.

Democratic

Invites others to participate in the business and be part of the decision-making process.

Everyone is encouraged to participate, which allows individuals to help with the direction of the business and provides recognition and job satisfaction.

Coaching

The leader encourages collaboration, empowerment and fulfilment.

Collaboration is the most important as it encourages others to achieve their potential.

Requires leader to have certain skills.

Affiliative

Focuses on working in a positive and harmonious environment, encouraging team work.

Involves resolving any conflicts quickly before they can escalate into something serious.

Encourages employees and managers to build a sense of trust and community.

Laissez-Faire

Manager has limited input into the work that employees perform.

Enables employees to complete tasks in their own way and to learn from their mistakes.

Encourages an element of creativity.

Important that the leader provides the required resources and tools for employees to complete their roles.
