Scientific Method
the method of discovery used by scientists
Observation
an act or instance of noticing or perceiving
Inference
a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning
Qualitative data
data representing information and concepts that are not represented by numbers
Quantitative data
information that can be counted or measured and expressed as a numerical value
Engineering Design Process
method engineers use to solve problems by first understanding the problem, then brainstorming and designing solutions( doesn’t have to be step by step )
Constraints
a limit or restriction
Variable
a symbol or a characteristic that can change or take on different values
Independent variable
what you can change in an investigation
Dependent variable
Can be tested to provide evidence for or against the statement
Controlled variable
what you measure in your investigation
Hypothesis
A scientific prediction that can be tested
Experiment
a controlled procedure designed to test a hypothesis( usually trails)
Inquiry Question
A question that guides your research or investigation to learn more about a topic.
Attraction
A force that pulls objects toward each other.
Cohesion
The force that holds molecules of the same substance together or the action or fact of sticking together or being united.
Surface Tension
The force on the surface of a liquid that makes it behave like a stretched elastic skin.
interval
The amount of space, time, or measurement between two points or events.
scale
A system or tool used to measure or compare size, amount, or distance.
X-axis
The horizontal line on a graph used to show values of the independent variable.
Y-axis
The vertical line on a graph where you usually plot the dependent variable or the output values.
natural phenomena
Events or processes that happen in nature without human involvement.
