Iago
Othello’s ensign or “standard-bearer”-- essentially a lower ranking officer who must report to Othello. Othello was recently promoted-- a promotion that Iago had hoped would fall to him.
Roderigo
A Venetian who has a crush on Desdemona; he has been paying Iago to help get him closer to her. |
Brabantio
A Venetian senator and the father of Desdemona. He has entertained Othello in his home multiple times, which is how his daughter met and fell in love with him.
Othello
A brave and competent soldier of advanced years and Moorish background.
Cassio
A Florentine soldier of good manners. Upon Othello’s promotion, he is chosen to be Othello’s lieutenant which further upset Iago.
Duke and Senators
Is the official authority in Venice, and has great respect for Othello
Desdemona
The daughter of Senator Brabantio and new wife of Othello-- her marriage to an outsider without her father’s consent is seen as a betrayal to him.
Montano
The governor of Cyprus, where Othello is sent to take up command.
Emilia
The wife of Iago and Desdemona’s loyal handmaid.
Bianca
A courtesan; Cassio’s jealous lover.
