POLITICAL SUPPRESSION

  • Supression of Communism Act - 1950 - any form of protest against apartheid was seen to be caused by communism, therefore any form of unrest was seen as communist-led and warranted a prison sentence

  • Criminal Amendment Act - 1953 - anyone accompanying someone guilty of criminal activity will also be found guilty and arrested until their innocence can be proven

  • Censorship Acts - 1955 &1956 - South African government critically restricted and monitored content opposing apartheid regime, limiting medias freedom of expression
