Part of the body’s defense system, protects the body against ingested infection
Salivary Glands
Secretion of saliva into the oral cavity, which begins the digestion of starchy foods in the mouth via the enzyme salivary amylase
Parotid Glands
Salivary Gland: Anterior to the ear and ducts into the mouth over second upper molar
Palatine Tonsils
Tonsil: On each side of the mouth at the posterior
Lingual Tonsil
Tonsil: at the base of the tongue, posterior to the oral cavity
Submandibular Glands
Salivary Glands: Located along medial aspect of the mandible in floor of the mouth, ducting under the tongue close to frenulum
Sublingual Glands
Salivary Glands: Small glands most anteriorly in the floor of the mouth and emptying under the tongue
