New cards

define cell necrosis

uncontrolled cell death in your tissues that leads to tissue death,

2
New cards

what are the two types of tissue healing?

  1. regenerative

  2. fibrous connective tissue repair

3
New cards

what is first intention/primary healing also known as?

regeneration

4
New cards

what is Second intention or secondary healing also known as?

Fibrous connective tissue repair

5
New cards

what is regeneration?

where an exact copy of the former cell is made, occurring at sites with simple cell function.

6
New cards

what structures cannot regenerate?

more complex structures such as the mature lung, brain and muscle cells

7
New cards

in regeneration, what is the success of healing dependent on?

dependent on the degree of damage to the tissue and how intact the functional structures of an organ is

8
New cards

what is fibrous connective tissue repair?

  • a deposit of collagen that fills the gap between normal tissue edges resulting in scar tissue

  • can occur in any cell/tissue

9
New cards

how long is the healing process of fibrous connective tissue repair?

weeks to months

10
New cards

does fibrous connective tissue repair restore the original function of a structure?

does not restore original function as the extent of the injury dictates the degree of continued function

11
New cards

what is the healing process of fibrous connective tissue repair dependent on?

  • Success of healing is determined by the diameter of the area damaged

  • Increased diameter = decreased healing = more scarring = reduced function

12
New cards

what are the 4 stages of fibrous connective tissue repair?

  1. A small cut involving the epidermis and dermis occurs, affecting the connective tissue

  2. Exudate fills the gap. Capillaries and fibroblasts appear.

  3. The epidermis regenerates and gaps fill with granulation tissue.

  4. The epidermis returns to normal and fibroblasts produce collagen to form a permanent scar.

13
New cards

what are the three types of complications in fracture healing?

  • immediate

  • intermediate

  • delayed

14
New cards

what does acute mean in medical terms?

severe, sudden in onset

15
New cards

what is osteomyelitis?

infection of the bone caused by staph bacteria

16
New cards

what are the 6 categories for a pathology?

  1. congenital/hereditary

  2. inflammatory

  3. degenerative

  4. metabolic

  5. traumatic

  6. neoplastic
