What is going to happen in this part of the speaking exam?
The examiner is going to give you two pictures and you must talk about these pictures and answer a question about them. For this you have 1 minute.
What do you need to do during this part of the exam?
You need to compare the photographs and speculate.
Which verbs can you use for speculation?
Must, could, may, might or canāt
Must > positive certainty (we are sure that something is true)
Canāt > negative certainty (we are sure something isnāt true)
Could, may or might > uncertainty/possibility (we do not know for sure)
To speculate about actions we use: modal verb + be + gerund (hele ww + ing)
Why is the man laughing? He might be listening to a funny podcast.
What do you have to do when you are given an option between two things?
Use a second conditional!
If I had to choose I would say basketball, because I donāt like golf.
What do you have to do when you are getting a question about something that happened in the past?
Use past models of deduction
Must, could, might, may, canāt, couldnāt + have + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)
The grass is wet. It must have rained.
Alice is late. She could have missed her train.
