Elbow Joint
Made up of three bones: humerus, radius, and ulna.
Radius Positioning Trick
The radius is on the thumb side; remember it as 'radio antenna with thumb'.
Types of Elbow Joints
There are three elbow joints: humeroulnar, humeroradial, and proximal radioulnar.
Valgus Forces
Resisted by the ulnar collateral ligament at the elbow.
Varus Forces
Resisted by the radial collateral ligament at the elbow.
Annular Ligament
Unique for surrounding the neck of the radius.
Interosseous Membrane Purpose
Helps distribute forces from the distal radius through the rest of the arm.
Pronation and Supination Plane
These motions occur in the transverse plane.
Elbow Flexion and Extension Plane
These motions occur in the sagittal plane.
Anterior Muscles of the Elbow
Includes Biceps brachii, Brachialis, Brachioradialis, and Pronator Teres.
Posterior Muscles of the Elbow
Includes Triceps brachii and Anconeus.
Elbow Flexion
The common motion produced by the anterior muscles of the elbow.
Elbow Extension
The common motion produced by the posterior muscles of the elbow.
Carrying Angle
The angle between the humerus and forearm in the frontal plane.
Cubitus Varus vs. Cubitus Valgus
Cubitus valgus is an angle larger than normal range; cubitus varus is smaller.
Humerus Features (Anterior View)
Includes coronoid fossa, medial epicondyle, lateral epicondyle, trochlea, capitulum, shaft.
Humerus Features (Posterior View)
Includes olecranon fossa, medial epicondyle, lateral epicondyle, trochlea, capitulum, shaft.
Radius Features (Anterior View)
Includes head, neck, radial tuberosity, styloid process, and ulnar notch.
Radius Features (Posterior View)
Includes radial tuberosity, styloid process, head, and ulnar notch.
Ulna Features (Posterior View)
Includes olecranon process, trochlear notch, coronoid process, radial notch, head, and styloid process.
Elbow Ligaments
Includes ulnar (medial) collateral ligament, radial (lateral) collateral ligament, and annular ligament.
