Lymphatic System
A network responsible for fluid recovery, immunity, and transporting lymph to the heart.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of stable internal conditions in the body.
Lymph
The fluid collected and carried through the lymphatic system.
Lymphatic vessels
Structures responsible for transporting lymph to the heart.
Lymph nodes
Components that inspect and clean lymph as it passes through.
MALT
Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue, immune tissue found in mucous membranes.
Pathogen
An organism that causes disease; literally means 'disease-producer'.
Innate Immune Response
The body's first line of defense, includes non-specific immunity.
Adaptive Immune Response
A specific immune response targeting one specific pathogen.
Antibody
Proteins made by B cells that bind to antigens and neutralize pathogens.
Pathogen examples
Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi, Protist, Worms.
Inflammation
A non-specific immune response characterized by redness, heat, swelling, and pain.
Macrophage
A type of phagocyte, meaning 'big eater', that engulfs and digests pathogens.
Cytotoxic T cells
Cells activated by helper T cells to destroy infected body cells.
Primary Immune Response
The initial immune response characterized by a slow response and fewer antibodies.
Secondary Immune Response
A faster and stronger immune response upon subsequent exposure to a pathogen.
Natural Active Immunity
Immunity acquired through natural infection.
Artificial Active Immunity
Immunity acquired through vaccination.
Natural Passive Immunity
Immunity acquired from mother through antibody transfer.
Artificial Passive Immunity
Immunity acquired through injection of antibodies.
Complement System
Helps the body by punching holes in pathogens and enhancing inflammation.
