What caused it
* The ruler of the Turkish empire wanted to extend his empire
* when the Russians invaded Romania and sank the Turkish fleet in 1853 the British & French sent 6000 men, starting the war

* The British and French landed in Sebastopol September 1854
* It soon fell to them after Russians fought incompetently
* Alexander II agreed to an armistice AKA treaty of Paris in 1856

Consequences

1. Exposed how weak and backward Russian army was, from lack of communication and transport to outdated equipment
2. Russia was not allowed to maintain a fleet in the Black Sea (ToP 1856), which was huge blow to national morale
3. Sebastopol fell to British & French forces in 1854, Russians lost that territory
