Jazz Age

the popularization of jazz music.

Langston Hughes

The movement's best-known poet. Many of his poems described the difficult lives of working-class African Americans.

Louis Armstrong

His talent rocketed him to stardom in the jazz world.

The Great Migration

6 million African-Americans moved out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West.

19th Amendment

 In 1919 women earned the right to vote.

Flappers

Women wearing shorter skirts and had their hair cut short. They rejected social norms of the times

18th Amendment

Prohibits the sale or manufacturing of alcohol.(1919)

Scopes “Monkey Trial”

In 1925 biology teacher John Scopes was brought to trial for teaching the theory of evolution.  State law required the theory of creation.  The trial turned into a debate between creationism and evolution.

Organized crime

gained strength, b/c of no alcohol. Mob leaders like Al Capone became rich. 

Speakeasy

also called a blind pig or blind tiger, is an illicit establishment that sells alcoholic beverages.
