1
New cards

Egregious

Shockingly bad or flagrant. Used to describe a violation so extreme it is

obvious to everyone.

2
New cards

Mercantilism

An economic system designed to enrich a mother country by controlling trade

— extracting cheap raw materials from colonies and forcing them to buy

expensive finished goods in return.

3
New cards

Endogamy

The practice of marrying only within one's own social or caste group, used for

thousands of years to maintain caste boundaries in India.

4
New cards

In Abeyance

A state of temporary suspension. India placed the Indus Waters Treaty in

abeyance in 2025 following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

5
New cards

Static vs. Dynamic

Static = fixed and unchanging. Dynamic = constantly active and changing.

India argues the 1960 treaty is too static for a dynamic world of climate

change and population growth.

6
New cards

Scuttle

A rapid, disorganized departure. The British 'scuttle' in 1947 left India without

any authority to manage the transition to independence, contributing directly

to the violence of Partition.

7
New cards

Partition

The political division of British India into two separate nations — India and

Pakistan — in 1947.

8
New cards

Silt

Fine-grained soil and minerals deposited by running water. The silt carried by

the Ganges from the Himalayas makes the Indo-Gangetic Plain one of the

most fertile regions on earth.

9
New cards

Sovereignty

The right of a nation to govern itself and manage its own resources

independently. India invokes sovereignty to justify controlling rivers that flow

through its territory.

10
New cards

Precipice

The edge of disaster. The announcement of Partition borders pushed the

subcontinent over a precipice into immediate, widespread violence.

11
New cards

Unprecedented

Never done or known before; unique in history. The displacement of 15

million people during Partition was unprecedented in recorded human history.

12
New cards

Benevolent

Well-meaning and kind; acting for the good of others. India argues it was

benevolent in 1960 by giving Pakistan 80% of the water, but says that

generosity is no longer sustainable.

13
New cards

Varna / Caste

The traditional Hindu social hierarchy dividing society into inherited ranks with

specific occupational roles. The four main Varnas are Brahmins

(priests/scholars), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and Shudras

(laborers). Dalits ('Untouchables') fell outside the system entirely.

14
New cards

Karma & Dharma

Dharma = one's duty or the 'right way of living.' Karma = the cumulative effect

of one's actions across lifetimes. Together they form the moral framework of

Hinduism.

15
New cards

Moksha

Liberation or release from the karmic cycle of death and rebirth — the

ultimate spiritual goal in Hinduism.

16
New cards

Power Vacuum

A situation where an authority figure or government departs and no one is

established to replace them. The British scuttle created a dangerous power

vacuum at the moment of Partition.

17
New cards

Hindutva

Hindu Nationalism — a political ideology promoting a dominant Hindu identity

for modern India. Associated with Prime Minister Modi and the BJP.

Contrasts sharply with Gandhi's vision of inter-religious unity.

18
New cards

Run-of-River

Project

A hydroelectric project that generates power using a river's natural flow and

returns the water downstream — as opposed to a dam that blocks and stores

water. India argues its projects on western rivers are run-of-river and

therefore within treaty rules.

19
New cards

Upstream /

Downstream

Upstream = closer to the river's source; the water flows through upstream

territory first. India is upstream; Pakistan is downstream. This creates an

inherent power imbalance — India controls the tap.
